A Mountaineer’s Paradise
There are many natural trails for hiking and biking within South Peak Resort. The beautiful White Mountain Range is a seemingly endless wonderland of walks and vistas that beckon you to explore. Chuck Woodman is a local expert in hiking and climbing at LaHout’s Summit Shop in Lincoln, NH. Chuck is a real mountaineer and has been on Loon Mountain for over 20 years. As a guide on Loon, Chuck was even involved in the development of Loon Mountain ski trails. He lives “just across the street from South Peak” and hikes the trails there every day with his golden retriever. Listening to Chuck talk about the many swimming holes and breathtakingly beautiful scenery makes one long to share in his New Hampshire Mountain life.
“You haven’t been to Loon? You have to see this place! You just HAVE to see this place! It’s incredible!” South Mountain is clearly this sportsman’s paradise. Chuck’s energy and enthusiasm are just one of the treasures of mountain living in New Hampshire.
Hiking Our Ski Trails
Local guides tell us that a ski slope without snow is a hiking trail! The same slopes that are avenues of speed and white light for skiers are excellent paths for hiking the rest of the year. In addition to all the wonderful trails on Loon Mountain, South Peak Resort’s back access ski trails are perfect for hiking and biking in the summer, too.
Snowshoeing
When it snows the hiking trails become snowshoe trails. Showshoe rentals are available at LaHout’s or Loon Mountain. Families oftentimes ride the gondola to the top of the mountain and criss-cross their way down. This is a gentle adventure through the woods that is appropriate for nearly everyone.
Biking
These trails and the scenic Kancamagus Highway are great for biking too. South Peak has a “fleet” of eight mountain bikes for Owners’ and Experience Package visitors’ use. In addition, Loon Mountain has bike rentals at their Adventure Center and trails on adjacent Loon property.
